Hello, how have you all been? In early August, Long Island, NY also experienced a stretch of hot and humid days, but recently, the temperature has started to drop below 20°C(68°F) in the mornings and evenings. There was a thunderstorm and flood warning last night. Fortunately, my house was not affected, but there were landslides and a nearby pond disappeared due to the collapse of the pool separating the sea water and fresh water... It's been a nasty weather. I hope everyone is safe.
This time, I would like to report on the recent PRINTAGANZA auction.
こんにちは、皆さんお元気でお過ごしでしょうか？ 8月前半、ニューヨークのロングアイランドでも蒸し暑い日々が続いていましたが、最近は朝夕の気温が20℃を下回ることも増えてきました。昨夜は雷雨と洪水警報が出ました。幸い我が家は被害がありませんでしたが、土砂崩れや、近くの池は海水と真水を隔てる淵の決壊で消滅するということが起きていたり…。やっかいな気候になりましたね。皆さんが安全であることを願います。今回は、前回のPRINTAGANZAオークションについてご報告いたします。
I have never attended a GALA event before. This is because GALAs are usually gatherings where people with financial means come together to donate. However, this time, I was invited as an artist and could attend casually, so I was looking forward to it a bit.
私はこれまでGALAというイベントに参加したことがありません。というのも、GALAは基本的に経済的に余裕のある人たちが寄付を目的に集まるイベントだからです。しかし今回は、作家として招待され、気軽に参加できるということで、少し楽しみにしていました。
Since I left the house late, by the time I arrived at the venue, LTV Studio, the lights had already been dimmed, and the first presentation, a short movie, had started. It was a documentary short film titled "Lasting Impressions", an intimate journey through the life and work of world-renowned printmaker, painter, innovator, and our monoprint class teacher, Dan Welden. The film delved into his upbringing, his approach to art, the journey that led him to where he is today, and the spiritual aspects within him that influence his work.
家を出るのが遅れてしまったため、会場であるLTVスタジオに着いたときにはすでに照明が落とされ、最初の出し物であるショートムービーが始まっていました。その映画は"Lasting Impressions"というタイトルのドキュメンタリー短編で、世界的に著名な版画家、画家、革新者、そして私たちのモノプリントクラスの先生であるダン・ウェルダンの人生と作品を通じた心に響く旅を描いています。映画は、彼の生い立ち、アートに対する姿勢、今日に至るまでの過程、そして彼の作品に影響を与える内面的なスピリチュアルな要素について深く掘り下げていました。
After the film ended, the studio was transformed into a mini-concert venue, and during that time, the guests stepped out into the hallway to view the displayed artworks. There was live cello music creating a lovely atmosphere. At first, I was nervous and unsure of what was happening, but as I looked around, I noticed a few familiar faces explaining their works in front of the displays. These were people I had met during the printmaking workshop, and they were promoting their own pieces.
映画が終わると、スタジオがミニコンサート会場に変更される間、お客さんは一度会場外の廊下に出て、そこで展示されている作品を観覧しました。そこはチェロの生演奏が優雅な雰囲気を醸し出していました。最初は緊張していて状況がよく分かりませんでしたが、周りを見渡すと、何人か見覚えのある人たちが作品の前で説明している姿が目に入りました。彼らは版画ワークショップで出会った人たちで、自分の作品を紹介していたのです。

Most of the prints displayed in the hallway were monotypes created during the workshop. Some artists had taken their works home on the same day the workshop ended and added individual touches to align them with their own styles. The artworks on display were part of a silent auction, with bids being placed online. The starting bid for these pieces was $50.
廊下に展示されていた版画のほとんどは、ワークショップで制作されたモノタイプです。中には、ワークショップが終わった当日に家に持ち帰り、さらに自分のスタイルに合わせて一点一点手を加えたような作品もありました。展示されている作品はサイレントオークション形式で、オンラインから入札が可能でした。最低入札価格は$50からでした。
After a while, lively music started coming from the venue. When I entered, the band The HooDoo Loungers had already started their performance. Since I’m not someone who frequently attends music concerts, it took some time to get used to the loudness of the sound coming from the speakers, and it made my ears hurt at first. However, it was enjoyable in its own way when familiar songs were played, and it had been a long time since I had heard live music.
しばらくすると、先程の会場から勢いのある音楽が流れてきました。中に入ると、The HooDoo Loungersというバンドのパフォーマンスがすでに始まっていました。私は普段ミュージックコンサートに積極的に行くタイプではないので、慣れるまではスピーカーから出る音の大きさに耳が痛く感じました。それでも、久しぶりに聞いた生演奏で、知っている曲が流れると、それなりに楽しいものです。
The people allowed into this venue were the artists who participated in the printmaking workshop and those who wished to participate in the GALA auction. VIP seats were priced at $275, while general attendees paid $100 or $75 with a discount ticket. Because of this, I had high expectations for the food, but it turned out to be neither overly luxurious nor disappointing—just decent. The dish I particularly enjoyed was blue cheese wrapped in grape skins. After some research, I found out it's called Blu del Re. Usually, I find blue cheese a bit too pungent to eat, but this one had a rich texture and was quite delicious 😋
この会場に入れるのは、版画ワークショップに参加した作家たちと、このGALAのオークションに参加を希望した人々です。VIPシートは$275、一般のお客さんは$100、または割引チケットを使って$75を支払っています。ですから、私はそこで提供される食事に期待していたのですが、思ったほど豪華なものではなく、まずまずといったところでした。私が気に入った食べ物は、ぶどうの皮で包まれたブルーチーズでした。調べてみると、これは「Blu del Re（ブルデルレ）」というらしいです。普段、ブルーチーズは匂いが強くて食べにくいのですが、これはこってり感があり、なかなかおいしかったです😋
After the concert ended, the second short movie, "The Making of Printaganza", was screened. It narrated Dan's passion for the Printaganza printmaking workshop and how it came to be. Following that, the venue quickly transformed into an auction hall. An auctioneer, a specialist in conducting auctions, took to the stage holding a small wooden gavel, which is used to finalize bids. He started the auction with high energy, joking, "Sorry I'm late! I was in such a rush that I got a speeding ticket on the way here!"
一通りコンサートが終わると、二つ目のショートムービー「The Making of Printaganza」が上映されました。ダン先生の「Printaganza」という版画教室に対する情熱と、その成り立ちが語られていました。その後、会場はオークション会場へと早変わり。オークションにはオークショニアと呼ばれる、専門の人が登場し、値付けを決定する時に使う小さな木槌、ガベルを手に持っていました。彼は「遅れてごめんね、急いだらスピード違反でチケットを切られちゃったよ」と、会場を盛り上げようとなかなかのハイテンションでオークションは始まりました。
The highlight of the event was a live auction in the English auction format with a reserve price set for each item. (For details on the auction system, please refer to the previous newsletter.) However, even as the auction began, the movement of bids from the audience was sluggish. The auctioneer tried various ways to encourage bidding, saying things like, "How about this, it's a great print, and you won’t find it at this price anywhere else. What do you think?" Despite these efforts, there were only a few bids starting from the minimum price, and the excitement was somewhat lacking.
今回の目玉であるライブオークションは、最低入札価格が決まっているリザーブ形式のイングリッシュオークションでした。（オークションのシステムについては、前回のニュースレターをご覧ください。）しかし、オークションが始まっても観客の入札の動きは鈍く、オークショニアが「どうですか、良い版画ですよ。この金額ではなかなか手に入りませんよ。どうですか？」とさまざまな言い回しで呼びかけても、最低金額から入札が1つ入る程度で、少し盛り上がりに欠けていました。
In situations like this, I often think about what I would do. I enjoy putting myself in the position of those involved and considering various scenarios. If I were the auctioneer in this setting, I would probably wait until the room was warmed up before starting the actual auction. Perhaps the auctioneer didn't have that luxury because he arrived late. For instance, I might start by asking, "Is there anyone here who is new to auctions?" and then suggest something like, "Let’s do some quick exercises to make sure everyone can raise their bids with ease," to help relax the audience.
こんな時、自分だったらどうするかをよく考えます。いろいろなシチュエーションで当事者の立場になって考えることを楽しんでいます。もし私がこの場のオークショニアであれば、会場が温まるまで本物のオークションは始めなかったでしょうね。彼の場合は遅刻してきたため、その余裕がなかったのかもしれませんが。例えば、「オークションに初めて参加する方はいらっしゃいますか？」と声をかけて、「では、誰にも負けないスピードで入札できるように、腕を簡単に上げられるような体操をしましょう」といった形で、リラックスさせることから始めるかもしれません。
I was reminded of a scene from a Japanese school TV drama I watched as a child. In that scene, the protagonist teacher, to break the silence when a difficult question was asked and the class became quiet, suggested, “If you’re confident, raise your hand with a palm, if you’re unsure but think it might be correct, use scissors, and if you’re worried you might be wrong, raise your fist!" This approach allowed all the students to energetically raise their hands and participate in the classroom activities. The story showed how even students who usually tried to blend into the background found the class more enjoyable. By making everyone feel like an important part of the classroom, it helped them find meaning in participating in the event.
そういえば、子供の頃に日本で観たスクール系のテレビドラマのあるシーンを思い出しました。主人公の先生は、授業中に難しい質問が出たときにクラスがシーンと静まり返ってしまう雰囲気を打破するために、答えがわからない人でもクラスに参加できるように「自信のある人はパー、多分そうじゃないかと思う人はチョキ、当ちゃっちゃうかもと思う人はグーで手をあげてください」と提案しました。これにより、全ての生徒が元気よく「はいはい！」と手をあげ、教室のアクティビティに参加できるようになりました。目立たないように小さくなっていた生徒も授業が楽しくなったというストーリーでした。自分もその場にいる大切な一人だと感じさせることで、行事に参加する意義を見出させるのでしょうね。
Let’s return to the topic of the auction. At the auction where I participated as a seller, I didn’t have the budget to purchase expensive pieces, so I had no intention of participating as a buyer. However, seeing that the first two prints were auctioned off at the minimum bid price of $350, I couldn’t help but think, “Wouldn’t it be profitable to resell these?” and other similar thoughts began to cross my mind.
少し話が逸れてしまいましたね。オークションの話に戻ります。出品者として参加したオークションで、私は高価な作品を購入する予算を持っていなかったので、バイヤーとして参加するつもりは全くありませんでした。しかし、最初の2つの版画が最低入札価格の350ドルで落札されているのを見て、「これって転売したら儲かるんじゃないか？」といった良からぬ思いがちらほらと浮かんできました。
I considered the main reasons why the bid amounts were not increasing. I felt the most critical issue was the lack of information about the artists participating in the live auction. When the artists are not specialists in printmaking, and the prints are first-time attempts like in this case, there are no online sales records. Without detailed descriptions or a history of past works, it’s difficult for bidders to form an emotional connection with the artist or the artwork. Even if the auctioneer repeatedly claims that the pieces are "a great deal," without supporting evidence, bidders may have struggled to determine the value of the works. It might have been better to provide more thorough explanations about the artwork and the artists. That said, it was also becoming uninteresting if the auction continued with only minimum price sales.
入札金額が上がらない主な理由について考えてみました。致命的だと感じたのは、ライブオークションに出品している作家さんの資料不足だと思います。作家が版画を専門としていない場合、今回のようなファーストトライのプリントはネット上に販売記録がないため、過去の作品経歴や細かい説明がなければ、作家やその作品に対する感情移入が難しく、いくらオークショニアが「お買い得」と叫んでも、その根拠が示されなければ入札者はその価値を判断できなかったのかもしれません。せめて、もう少し作品や作家について丁寧な説明があればよかったのかもしれない。それにしても、このまま最低価格での落札が続くのは面白くありません。
At the table where I was seated, some friends included an artist and a couple of collectors. There was also a bid tag with the number 1 on it. I asked my friend, "Don’t you think the previous works were way too cheap? If they're going for such low prices, I’d really like to get one of Dan’s pieces. How much would you be willing to pay for it?" She responded enthusiastically, saying she’d be willing to buy it for up to $500. It seemed like things were about to get interesting.
私が座ったテーブルには知人の作家さんとコレクターの方がいました。そこに番号１の入札タグがあったのです。知人に「これまでの作品、あまりにも安すぎると思わない？こんなに安いのなら、ダン先生の作品は欲しいなぁ。いくらだったら購入する？」と尋ねてみました。彼女は「$500までだったら購入するつもり」と最初から買う気満々の返答をしました。これは面白いことになりそうです。
As the people in the room grew tired of the chilly atmosphere, the auction for Dan's prints finally began. His prints also started with a minimum bid of $350, and it seemed that everyone was thinking the same thing. The previously silent atmosphere quickly changed, and as soon as the auction began, bids started coming in. And wouldn’t you know it, my friend sitting next to me was also raising her tag.
会場にいる人たちもその冷え切った雰囲気に痺れを切らした頃、いよいよダンさんの版画のオークションが始まりました。ダンさんの版画も最低入札価格が$350からで、皆考えていることは同じなのでしょうね。これまでの静まり返った雰囲気とは打って変わり、オークションが始まるや否や、すぐに入札がありました。そして、私の隣に座っている彼女もタグを上げているではありませんか。
When the auctioneer asked, “Do I have $400?” a tag was raised from the back, and I noticed the auctioneer turning towards me and saying, “Yes, this person here… Yes, $500.” It turned out that my friend had aggressively raised her tag. However, this was short-lived, as another bid came in from the back. The auctioneer then called out, “How about $600!” and turned towards our side. “Yes! $600,” came the response, and to my surprise, it was my friend’s tag! At this point, the entire room began to buzz. Given that this was a print by a master printmaker and a documentary film had been shown about him, the value was understood, and the auction finally heated up.
「$400はいますか？」というオークショニアの声に、遠くの方からタグが上がり、気がつくとオークショニアが私の方に向かって「はい、こちらの方は…、はい、$500」と言っています。なんと、私の横に座っている知人がタグを上げていたのです。しかし、それも束の間、すぐに遠くの方からさらに入札がありました。「さぁ、$600はどうですか！」とオークショニアがこちらを振り向きます。「はい！$600」と私の隣の彼女がタグを上げているではありませんか！こうなると会場全体がザワザワとし始めました。さすがにプリントマスターの作品ですし、ドキュメンタリー映画も流れた後ですから、その価値がわかっているのでしょう。ようやくオークションに火がつきました。
I don’t have the exact final price for the auctioned piece on hand, but I recall that Dan’s work was sold for over $700. As a result, my friend, who had played the role of the firestarter, ended up feeling somewhat relieved, saying, “I couldn’t buy it even at $600, which was above my budget.” I had only participated in online auctions on eBay before, so experiencing a live, in-person auction was truly fascinating. The intimidating presence of the auctioneer made me feel as though I had to be cautious not to inadvertently raise my arm, and I was so nervous that I had to pay close attention to my gestures and even how I scratched my head.
今手元に落札された最終価格の正確な情報はありませんが、ダン先生の作品は$700以上で落札されたように記憶しています。結果、知人は火付け役としての役割を終え、「予算以上の$600でも買えなかったわね」と、ある意味ホッとしている様子でした。私はeBayのオンラインオークションにしか参加したことがないので、リアルで対面するオークションは本当に面白い体験でした。オークショニアが迫ってくるあの威圧感は、油断するとつい腕が上がってしまいそうで、頭を掻くことや手の動かし方にも注意が必要だと感じるほど緊張しながら楽しめました。

(As of the time I am writing this, the results of the live auction have not yet been updated.) By the way, my monoprint piece received two bids starting from the initial price of $50 and was eventually sold for $100. I was happy that this sale helped to contribute, even if only a little, to the costs of repairing the roof of the LTV studio and supporting the printmaking classes. Since the auctioned prints were available for pickup at the event, I stayed until the end to find out who had purchased it. It turned out to be an artist who had expressed their desire for my work since our time together in the printmaking class.

Taking this experience as a stepping stone, I’m hoping to create not only installation pieces that aren’t necessarily intended for sale but also works that are more accessible, can be exhibited in various places, and can be enjoyed in people's homes.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have had such a valuable experience.
これを機に、売ることを前提としないインスタレーション作品ばかりではなく、もっと身近に気軽にさまざまな場所で観ていただける作品を作り、皆さんのお手元に飾っていただけるようなものが生まれれば良いなぁと思っています。
